Digital Revolution

The apple orchard of tomorrow: The LIDO open-air laboratory at the Laimburg Research Center is a testing ground for agricultural scientists, engineers and IT technicians.        

  • Digitalization and smart technologies have been the focus of the Laimburg Research Centre for years. Today, LIDO sets global standards in the field of artificial intelligence in apple cultivation. 
  • In the new ipoma Issue 03, Barbara Bachmann reports on the LIDO and the dedicated experts who conduct research there. We also visited LIDO with our camera on a sunny summer's day: the video will soon be available here!

Genetic Evolution

A miracle weapon against new pathogens and the climate crisis. Could new breeding methods, known as New Breeding Techniques, or NBTs for short, revolutionize apple breeding?  

  • What opportunities and controversies do the new breeding methods entail? And what is currently being discussed in the EU Commission? The dossier by author Christian Heinrich in ipoma Issue 03 takes a comprehensive look at these questions. 
  • This topic will be explored in depth on the first day of the Interpoma Congress 2024. Learn how NBTs enable targeted and rapid changes in the apple genome. In addition to reading, you can listen to our audio story, which will be available after the exhibition.

A New Way of Tasting

The training for apple sommeliers from South Tyrol is unique in the world: an intensive course with a focus on sensory analysis.


  • How do you become an apple sommelier? What knowledge can be acquired with this training? 
  • In an interview with ipoma Issue 03, Antonia Widmann, coordinator of the South Tyrolean Apple Consortium and apple sommelier herself, provides exciting insights into the course.

  • In a lively debate, Jan Plagge, President of Bioland e. V., and Philippe Binard, General Delegate of the industry association Freshfel, discuss NBTs in Europe.
